Abby Knight
Head Coach of Juniors Programs
Abby Knight joined Cambridge Boat Club as the head coach for the competitive juniors program in summer 2020. In 2021, the team won the women's 4x, women's 2x, and men's 2x at the USRowing Northeast Youth Regional Championships. The women's 2x and women's 4x went on to place 3rd and 4th, respectively, at the USRowing Youth National Championships.
In summer 2021, the team competed at the USRowing Summer National Championships, placing 1st in the U19 women's 1x and 3rd in the women's U19 8+ and women's U19 4x.
In fall 2021, the team placed 2nd, 5th, and 12th in the women's youth 2x, 8th and 16th in women's youth 1x, and 10th in the men's youth 1x at the Head Of The Charles. The team also won the women's 1V and 2V 4x, and placed 2nd in the women's U19 1x, men's U19 1x, and women's U19 2x at the Head of the Fish.
Before joining CBC as head coach, Abby was the assistant coach for women’s lightweight rowing at Boston University. During her time at BU, the team won two conference championships at the Eastern Sprints and two IRA National Championships in the women’s lightweight 2x.
Abby graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and rowed for the Division 1 women's lightweight team. During her time at Wisconsin, she won IRA and Eastern Sprints titles, including three team championships and placed 1st in the Head Of The Charles twice in the women’s lightweight 8+.
Abby holds a USRowing Level 3 Coaching Certification and also helps with coaching the Boston Rowing Federation, which supports aspiring and current Olympic and Paralympic rowers who are living and training in Boston.
Jon Smith
Assistant Coach of Juniors Programs
Jon has been involved in rowing since 1977 and been a part of champion crews since high school. He represented the US internationally from 1982 through 1988, then again in 1990 and 1992. He began coaching rowing in 2013 working with masters rowers with skills ranging from beginners to competitive rowers. He has been involved as a coach with the CBC Juniors and various U23 rowers since 2016 in a variety of roles, notably ensuring the athletes notice sunsets, turtles, and blue herons. He also holds a Level 2 Coaching Certification from USRowing.
CB Sands-Bohrer
Assistant Coach of Juniors Programs
CB has been an assistant coach with Cambridge Boat Club since 2014, and has over 30 years of rowing and coaching experience. CB is an eight-time U.S. National Team member, winning two gold medals at the World Championships in the lightweight double sculls ('86/'89) and a bronze in 1984 and 1987. CB was inducted into the National Rowing Foundation Hall of Fame in 1997 and recognized again by the NRF in 2000.She has been a first-place finisher at the Head Of The Charles for many years, winning her age group in the 1x, 2x, and 4+ while setting course records in the 2x and 4+ by over 30 seconds.
